There are a lot of people using Word daily to do everything from a casual entry in the absence of paper and pen to the most important document they have written in their lives, and none of them is safe from a possible “mini heart attack” in case of You miss the work you have been doing. If this happens, what we can do to recover unsaved word document?
How to recover unsaved word document?
There are several ways to recover unsaved word document, some simpler than others. There is a way to prevent any accident. Let’s start with the most usual way to recover a document:
Recover automatically from Word
Microsoft Word usually has the recovery function enabled by default; Anyway, later, we will tell you how to check if this tool is configured.
The automatic way you may already know if you have ever lost a document due to a power outage or any other unforeseen. In case Word has been abruptly closed, and you have not saved your document. All you have to do is restart the PC and open Word.
Most likely, you will see a bar on the left side of the window in which you are notified that there are recovered jobs available. It is enough to open one by one to find the one you need and save it later in the usual way.
Recover it manually in Word
If for some reason you closed the Word window and clicked on “Don’t Save,” everything seems lost, but it is not. All you have to do is open the software again and enter the “File” option (in the top bar). Then click on “Information,” then on “Recover documents without saving.”
Once this is done, the folder where the recovered documents are stored temporarily will be opened. There may be more than one, so choose the ones that are available by double-clicking to open them with Word. Note that the format of these files is “.ASD” instead of.”DOC”.
Recover it using a file path
If you need to reach the folder where files are automatically stored more directly, just press the “Windows” key and the “R” key at the same time to open the “Run” window. There you can copy and paste any of these routes:
- % APPDATA% \ Microsoft \ Word (for automatically retrieved documents).
- % LOCALAPPDATA% \ Microsoft \ Office \ UnsavedFiles (for unsaved documents).
Here you can find any file that may have been saved automatically; As we already mentioned, the files are saved in “.ASD” format and open with Word, so you can start this application and simply drag the file to that window.
How do I prevent accidents?
The easiest way to prevent accidents and ensure that all the documents you create in Word are safe is to activate the auto-recovery tool and adjust the time span that passes each time the program automatically saves the progress in a document.
To do this, you have to go to the “File” tab at the top of the window and then click on “Options.”
Configure autosave or auto-recovery in Word
In the window that follows, go to the “Save” section and check (if not active) the option “Save self-recovery information every…”. Here you can set how often the file will be stored; If you use Word all day and write a lot, you may want to change this number to a minimum.
As you can see, if you lose a document, it is not necessarily the end of the world, especially if you adjust the work recovery parameters.
In effect, you will no longer have to start over from scratch if you suffer a blackout, an unexpected shutdown or a system restart. The latest versions of Microsoft Office come with an automatic recovery system that opens when you restart the application.
It doesn’t matter if you are working with Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. This technology works with all these applications and is activated automatically, which significantly simplifies its use.
It is important to keep in mind that there may be several documents on the menu. We can retrieve and we are not sure which ones we want to keep.
In case of doubt, we can guide ourselves by the time of the autosave, since those that include the last changes will have a more recent hour. We also have the option to view the documents to assess if we want to keep them. You can save them with a specific name or delete them directly.
