Our hair can be damaged in many different ways during the summers – overexposure to the sun’s harmful rays, sweat, and humidity and of course, spending a lot of time in a pool, better known as chlorinated water.

While all those are reasons enough that can lead to having a bad hair day and causing long-term damage, preventive care is all that your hair needs to stay beautiful. While you are looking for all the products that can do wonders for your hair, remember to check a few things first.

  2. Hair type – smooth, curly, wavy, dyed, treated, permed, smoothed or any other.

1 Avoid too many cosmetic products

Summer already dries your hair and causes damage. So make sure you are gentle with any chemical hair treatment during this period. Avoid too many dyes, either in the spa or at home.

If you want to dye your hair or change color during the summer, try and do it a month or two before the sun is strong.

2 Love your conditioner

While you are drying out the hair on Sun, make sure you help restore some of the moisture and life in it by using a conditioner that is rinsed. Buy one that suits your hair type and texture. If you are going to swim, remember to put on some conditioner without rinsing and wear a swimming cap.

3 Use the shampoo with care

While you feel you can shampoo your hair every day, doing it alone will cause more harm than good. Too much shampoo can dry out your scalp and hair much more. If you tend to sweat more on the scalp and if your hair becomes greasy and sweaty easily, opt for a mild shampoo that is especially good for the summers.

Wash only the scalp with shampoo, not the hair, and as you wash your hair, the foam of the shampoo will begin to rinse your hair down, cleaning your hair as well. Put the shampoo separately in your hair and the ends will dry them out.

4 Swimming

During the summer, you surely love going to the pool, right? If you are going to swim, remember not to wash with shampoo before you go swimming, because this will strip your hair of all its protective oils and make it extra vulnerable to chemicals and salt in the water.

Once you are in the pool and have taken a quick shower, use a shampoo containing ethylene tetra-acetic acid. This will remove any harmful effects of the chlorine that the water may have.

5 Avoid heat

The sun is already applying too much heat to your hair, so you should avoid the extra heat as much as you can. Do not use the dryer as often, and if required, wash your hair a half hour before so you have enough time to air dry. Avoid using the straightening iron and curling irons and let it be as natural as possible.

The tips of your hair get a lot of damage during the summer. This is when you will see the tips open and dry, and this is not healthy for your hair, nor does it make it look good. If you have recently dyed your hair, try to leave less in the sun, especially when it is at its maximum level. If you need to do it, try to cover your hair with a cap or scarf.

8 Sun protection

The best way to protect the hair from the scorching sun is by wearing a scarf. If the scarf is not something you like, then make sure to use a rinse-less conditioner that has sunscreen.

If you have to do too much work outdoors and are in the sun often, opt for hair products that have a good amount of SPF in them. Maybe you want to also opt for a special mask for hair or a product that protects you from the sun that is made for your hair.
